Acenet Internet Services provides two varieties of email accounts. Gateway and Domain mail. Depending on how your account is setup you will have access to either option. Unless otherwise stated your email account will be limited to 20 Megabytes of storage space and/or 1000 message. When you reach this quote an email is sent out letting you know you have reached your limit. You will need remove excess messages in order to continue to receive mail.

Below is a detailed comparison between our account types.

Gateway mail Vs. Domain mail

Your web hosting site hosting comes with a either a Gateway mail account or Domain mail accounts.

Your hosting plan can be upgraded at any time to include the services you want. More details about the services available for each hosting plan can be found here.

Gateway mail

MDaemon allows a single mailbox on the Internet to serve as a corporate "mailbag" collecting all of the mail for an entire organization. Gateway mail is setup so that all incoming email are channeled into the one account. Gateway mail accounts receive emails for all addresses in your domain, conversely you can also send from any email address for your domain name.

 *@example.com -> examplemail@acenet.net.au

The domain name example.com would collect sales@example.com, info@example.com, webform@example.com, anything-you-like-that-is-up-to-255-letters-long@example.com and place them into the one mail bag. The computer looks for any email that has 'example.com' after the @ symbol. These emails will be collected into the one "mailbag" so you can download all of your messages in one hit.

With the incoming address being anything you want it is also possible to use any email address you like on outgoing mail, eg. sales@example.com, info@example.com, etc. You can even put a different email address on business stationary, web site and any application forms you sign up for. This way your can keep track of where your email are coming from without having to login to multiple accounts.

The advantage of this sort of setup is that if only one or two people are checking your email then they will have access to all the email sent to you. This account is also usefully if you have your own mail server as it can be setup to retrieve emails off our servers and redistribute it on your local network.

If you are interested in setting up a server you can contact Acenet to organise to have a server setup in your place of business.

Gateway mail accounts are limited if you want multiple people to check the same mail box. If have more than one person checking your email addresses we strongly recommend choosing a package that includes domain mail boxes, or upgrading an account do so.

As on June 2004, Discovery hosting package now have a choice of either a gateway mail box or domain mail addresses. Please contact webadmin@acenet.net.au if you would like to find out more details.

With this sort account all your email can redirected to another email account. Please contact us to find out how.

Domain mail

Domain mail accounts start off with 10 or more mail boxes, depending on your plan. You can designate an email name of each of these accounts. These mail boxes are completely separate from each other. If someone sends an email message to sales@example.com.au then only the person with the access details to sales@example.com.au will be able to access the email. Thus, administration@example.com.au will not be allowed to view any of the email of sales@example.com.au.

Each individual inbox has a unique email name, username and password. You will need to provide a password when setting up a new email account.

Stray mail - Postmaster account

Domain mail accounts come with a special email address call 'postmaster'. Postmaster is where emails are sent that have no designated email address (say someone mis-spelt the email address or a particular inbox has been closed). By default the postmaster needs to be set admin@yourdomain.com.au however we can redirect this address if desired.

Adding accounts

Mail boxes can be setup via the acenetglobal users' area, over the phone or via fax. Once we have desired addresses logged in the system it can take between 4-8 hours for your email addresses to become active.

More email

If you are looking to send more email than the recommended daily allowance then you may want to consider a mailing list. Many web hosting package come with mailing lists however individual mailing lists can be added to your account. See mailing lists for more details
